산자락과 들에 자라는 두해살이풀로 줄기는 곧추서고 거지가 갈라지며, 높이 20~50cm이다.
전체에 누운 털이 있으며, 다소 잿빛이 돈다.
꽃은 3~6월에 피며, 윗부분의 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달린다.
