미나리아재비과 바람꽃속 여러해살이 풀꽃.
제주도와 남부지방의 일부지역에서 자라는 남방바람꽃은 키는 1m 내외이고 잎은 둥근심장형인데
세갈레로 깊게 갈라진다. 뿌리에서 나온 잎은 잎자루가 길며 줄기잎은 잎자루가 없다.
줄기끝에 깊게 결각이진 3장의 포(꽃싸게 잎)가 있고 그 가운데서 1~3개의 꽃대가 나와 한송이씩의
흰꽃이 핀다. 다른 바람꽃과 같이 꽃잎은 퇴화하여 없으며 꽃잎같은 꽃받침이 5장이 있는데 앞쪽은
흰색이고 뒷면은 붉은색이라서 뒷태가 고운꽃이라고도 불린다.
남방바람꽃은 제주에서 처음 발견되어 한라바람꽃으로, 남쪽에서 자란다하여 남바람꽃으로 불리다
남방바람꽃으로 불리지만 아이러니 하게도 북방계식물이다
