미나리아재비과의 여러해살이풀
비교적 높은산의 배수가 잘되는 너덜지대에 자라며 키는 40~50cm 정도이고 뿌리가 육질이고 굵다
4~5월에 백색의 꽃이 한송이씩 피며 씨방은 1개이다.
산에 피는 작약의 종류로는 백작약, 붉은색 꽃이피는 산작약, 백색꽃이 피면서 씨방이 2개인 참작약 등이 있는데
해갈이를 하며 꽃이 피고 또한 눈에 보이는 족족 캐가는 통에 꽃을 보기가 쉽지않은 꽃이다
