상수리나무[참나무과 참나무속]

흔히 참나무라고 하지만 참나무라는 나무는 없고 참나무과의 나무를 통털어 참나무라 부른다.

상수리나무는 열매를 가리키는 한자어 상실(橡實)에 '-이'가 붙어 '상실이나무' 라고 하다가 상수리나무가 되었다.

상수리나무 열매를 흔히 도토리라고 하는데, 도토리는 "돼지가 먹는 밤"이란 뜻으로 돼지의 옛 말이

'돝'이므로 '돝의 밤'이 '도톨밤'을 거쳐 '도톨'에 접미사 이가 붙어 도토리가 되었다
