아그배나무[장미과 사과속]

                                                                    (잎지는 넓은잎 중간키나무)

 

가을에 굵은 콩알 크기의 열매가 긴 자루에 대여섯 개씩 모여 달리고 빨갛게 익는 모양을 보고 아기 배 같다고

'아기배'라고 부르다가 아그배가 되었다. 악(兒)+으(매개모음)+배(梨)의 구조라는 것이다.

그러나 열매의 모양이 배보다는 사과를 더 닮았으며 실제로도 배나무속이 아니고 사과나무속에 속한다.

설악산, 덕유산, 한라산 등 아고산지대의 숲에 자라며, 5~6월에 흰색의 꽃이 핀다.
