매실나무[장미과 벗나무속]

옛 문헌에는 매실나무가 옛 글자인 呆(매)로 나와 있는데 이는 나무 위에 열매를 달고 있는 매실나무를 형상화한

것이라 한다. 꽃이 비슷한 살구나무와 매실나무를 구분하기 위해  살구나무를 뜻하는 杏(행)를 거꾸로 해서

呆(매)로 쓴 것이라고도 한다.

매실나무는 열매를 얻기 위해 심었었는데 지금은 꽃나무로 재리 매김 해서 매화라는 이름으로 더 많이 불린다
