깊은 산 햇빛이 드는 숲 가장자리 나 건조한 풀밭에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다.
줄기는 곧추서며 거미줄 같은 흰 털이 나고 높이는 50~100cm다.
줄기에 나는 잎은 난상 심장형으로 길이 10~20cm로 크며 앞면은 녹색이고
뒤면은 흰 털이 있어 흰색으로 보인다. 꽃은 8~10월에 검은빛이 도는 자주색으로 핀다
