잎지는 넓은잎 큰키 나무로 5~20m 정도로 자라며 어린 가지는 갈색으로 타원형 또는 원형의 껍질눈(皮目)이 있다.
4~5월에 흰색의 꽃이 피고, 열매는 다갈색으로 익는다.
우리가 먹는 배는 이 나무의 개량종이다
