고도가 높은 산자에 자라는 작은 키 낙엽떨기 나무로 곧게 자라며 키가 30~50cm 정도이다.
꽃은 4~6월에 흰색으로 피고 열매는 장과로 붉은 색이며 7~8월에 익는다.
나무껍질을 종이의 원료로 사용한다
