높은 산의 경사면이나 능선부에 드물게 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 가지가 많이 갈라지며, 높이 2~4m 정도
자라며 가지에 사마귀 같은 돌기상 피목이 있다.
꽃은 6~7월에 붉은 갈색 또는 자주색으로 피는데 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 꽃대에 1~3개가 달린다
