높은 산이나 고지대의 풀밭에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 네모지며 높이 10~30cm이다.
꽃은 7~8월에 보라색으로 피는데 줄기와 가지 끝에서 원추꽃차례를 이루며. 꽃부리가 4개로 깊게 갈라진다.
