냇가 및 습지에 자라는 여러해살이풀.
꽃은 7~9월에 피고 잎겨드랑이에 3~5개가 취산상으로 달리며 분홍색으로 핀다
전초에 타닌 및 사리카린이 들어 있으며 지사제로 사용한다
