미국에서 들어온 1년생 잡초이다.
인천 근처에서 퍼지기 시작하여 전국으로 퍼졌으며 생명력이 강하여 척박한 곳에서도 잘 자란다
꽃은 7~9월에 피며 전체에 긴 털이 있는 털백령풀과 흰색 꽃이 피는 큰백령풀이 있다.
