산기슭에 자라는 덩굴나무이다
줄기는 가늘고 능선이 있으며 덩굴손이 있어 다른 물체를 감으며 길게 뻗는다
잎은 홑잎이고 덩굴손과 마주나며 난상 원형 또는 삼각상 원형으로 심장저이고
가장자리에 이 모양의 톱니가 있다
꽃은 6~7월에 잎과 마주나는 원추화서에 빽빽하게 달리는데 암수가 다른 그루에서 핀다
열매는 장과로 가을에 검게 익으며 맛이 좋다
