잎이 4장씩 돌려나서 붙여진 이름이다
줄기는 아래에서 비스듬히 누워 자라고, 위는 곧게 자라며 높이 20~40cm이고 네모진다
꽃은 연녹색이고 봄부터 가을까지 피며, 열매는 2개가 붙어서 들리며 표면에 바늘 같은 돌기가 밀생 한다.
