대극과 식물 중 유일하게 선체의 양쪽 끝이 길게 나온 초승달 모양이다.
줄기는 곧추서며 키 20~40cm 정도이고 붉은 보랏빛을 띠며, 자르면 젖 같은 흰색의 진이 나온다.
꽃은 배상꽃차레에 4~7월에 노란빛이 도는 녹색으로 피는데 4~5개의 수꽃과 1개의 암꽃이 있다
포엽은 세모 꼴이고 2장이 맞다아 있다.
