산자락이나 들에 드물게 자라는 향유는 줄기가 네모지고 가지가 많이 갈라진다
꽃은 8~9월에 한쪽으로 치우쳐 달리는 꽃차레에 연한 분홍색으로 피고 향이 강하다.
